Sea Scout Ship 12 - "Barracuda" Ship 12 Home Page

Since it's revival, Sea Scout Ship 12 has been meeting at the Glen Cove Yacht Club and sailing out of Hempstead Harbor and Oyster Bay. Historically, Ship 12 had been operational in Glen Cove from the 1930's to the 1960's when it was dis-established. The Club's History Pages include photos of the Sea Scouts raising the flags during the Club's Commissioning Day ceremonies in the early years of the Club.

Sea Scout Ship 12 was re-established in 1999 under the guidance of long-time Sea Scout leader and Nassau Council Commodore Bill Kempner, and many other local adults representing several organizations. Ship 12 is jointly sponsored by the City of Glen Cove's Recreation Department and the Lion's Club.

GCYC Member Tom Bond, a former Skipper of the original Sea Scout Ship 12 in the early 1960's provided his extensive experience as a Committee Member since 1999, and helped to make this reincarnation of the unit a success. Many other adult leaders contribute to the exceptional experience provided to these scouts through Ship 12. The unit's current Skipper (senior adult leader) is GCYC Member Steve Rudolph.

Ship 12 is "co-ed" and participates in numerous maritime events, sailing voyages and camping, canoeing and skiing trips during the year. They meet at the GCYC Clubhouse on alternate (2nd and 4th) Thursday evenings, and at the Oyster Bay Waterfront Center during the summer months for evening sailing practice. Membership is open to young men and women ages 14-21. New members welcome.

Meeting times are 8:00 pm during the winter months. Check their meeting and event calendar for actual times and dates at:

Flotilla 12-03

Flotilla 12-03 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary meets monthly at the Glen Cove Yacht Club. The Flotilla's members are involved in marine patrols, providing safety inspections for recreational boats, and public education through various courses given in the community.

The Flotilla would like to advise the boating community of the following information from the U.S. Coast Guard about the necessity of continued vigilance while we go about our lives under the threat of domestic terrorism.

HOMELAND SECURITY

Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, many boaters have opted to try other sports and stay off the water. The U.S. Coast Guard wants all Americans to get back on the water and enjoy boating, but with a cautious eye for dangers.

Boaters should be more cautious and constantly aware of their surroundings. Here are a few simple rules to follow: Observe all security zones and avoid commercial port operation areas. Do not stop or anchor beneath bridges or in a channel. Secure and lock your boat when not on board. When stored in the water, disable the engine. Avoid restricted areas such as dams, powerplants, etc., and observe all security zones, especially around military installations.

NEW LAW: Naval Vessel Protection Zone - You are required to stay at least 100 yards away from any military vessl and maintain minimum steerage speed within 500 yards. Violators face a quick and severe response, 6 years imprisonment, and $250,000 fine.

You Should Report
  • Suspicious persons conducting unusual activities near security areas, bridges, on or near the water.
  • People establishing roadside stands near marinas and waterfront facilities.
  • Unknown persons photographing or creating diagrams around powerplants, under bridges, waterfront facilities or any other high-risk areas or vessels.
  • Unknown or suspicious persons loitering for extended periods of time around waterfront areas.
  • Suspicious persons attempting to borrow or rent watercraft or boats.
  • Suspicious vendors attempting to sell or deliver merchandise or drop-off packages in waterfront areas.

IF YOU OBSERVE SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOR ON OR NEAR THE WATERFRONT, CONTACT LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT IMMEDIATELY, OR

On Long Island Sound, Connecticut or L.I. North Shore, Call 1-800-774-8724

On L.I. South Shore, Call 1-800-697-8724
